Dr. Calton completed his Joint Replacement training at the prestigious OrthoCarolina training-center with Dr. Tom Fehring. Dr. Fehring has been one of our country's preeminent surgeon leaders and served as President of the Hip Society, Knee Society and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Dr. Calton has over 20 years of experience specializing in total hip and total knee replacement surgery. Dr. Calton has spent his career improving many areas of joint replacement surgery including: designing hip and knee replacement implants, inventing and designing surgical instruments, innovating anesthesia and patient recovery models with the goal of constantly improving the patient's experience.
Hip Implant Designer: As one of the earliest adopters of the “Anterior Hip Procedure” in Utah, Dr. Calton noticed flaws in the hip implant which was commonly used. The Corail hip system has been one of the worlds most successful hip implants….however, it needed updating. The stem needed to be proportionalized for smaller patients and have improved stepping or sizing to accommodate each patient's unique anatomy. After discussions with members and fellow surgeons, Dr. Calton designed the Entrada hip replacement system. The Entrada hip was brought into use in October of 2017 and is now the fastest growing implant in the Ortho Development line.
Knee Replacement Cutting Block: Most knee systems are based on a size once and then all cuts are made approach. Dr. Calton’s approach is innovative-- to systematically prepare and customize the knee to the patient’s individual bone and soft tissue. Instruments to do this were lacking and so, in conjunction with engineers at Ortho Development, Dr. Calton invented and patented a multi-adjustable cutting jig that allows for micro adjustments to customize the preparation for each individual patient. In addition, Dr. Calton designed a trial system that allows for soft tissue balancing prior to final knee preparation--this system is unique in knee replacement surgery.
Knee Implant Designer: Dr. Calton was contacted by the knee implant industry in the early 2000’s to evaluate a knee being developed by two Mayo Clinic Surgeons. The “Balanced Knee System” had taken the best of the two leading knee designs and combined them into a new system. Before joining the design team Dr. Calton had three requirements: provide 1mm incremental polyethylene (plastic) inserts and narrow and wide femur options. Ortho development was the first company to offer this level of precision and is still the only company to offer standard, narrow and wide femur options. The Balanced Knee is part of Dr. Calton’s dedication to precision joint replacement. Dr. Calton went on to be a principal designer of the Balanced Knee Revision System.
Dr. Calton is also an active rock climber, backcountry skier, mountain biker, and pilot.
